What is the Ten-Series?

The hallmark of Rolfing is the Ten-Series, the goal of which is to balance and optimize both the structure (shape) and function (movement) of the entire body over the course of ten unique Rolfing sessions. Dr. Ida Rolf designed the sessions to cover the territory of the whole body in the least amount of sessions possible. Rolfing is a therapy that will acknowledge your pains but we try to address those trouble spots not by only working where it hurts but by balancing the entire body. If you’ve never received a Rolfing session before, the 10 series is the best place to start.

  • Sessions 1 – 3 focus on the superficial layers of fascia while freeing up the breath, creating solid support from the ground, and lengthening the side-line of the body.

  • Sessions 4 – 7 address the deeper fascial layers of the body while continuing to balance and organize the legs, pelvis, shoulders, and head.

  • Sessions 8 – 10 are the integrative sessions that help solidify the changes achieved so far and relate the work to daily life.

Who developed Rolfing®?

Where did Rolfing® come from? Dr. Ida P. Rolf (1896-1979) developed her work, which she coined ‘Structural Integration’, in the 1930s and 1940s. Clients and practitioners coined this work “Rolfing®”. Dr. Rolf established the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in 1971 in Boulder, Colorado, where it remains to this day. Born in The Bronx, New York, she went on to get her PhD. in Biochemistry at Columbia University. Dissatisfied with existing medical care and driven to find solutions to her own health problems, she spent years studying different systems of alternative healing and manipulation, including homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, and yoga. Bringing together such a rich variety of perspectives, Dr. Rolf discovered that she could achieve remarkable changes in posture and structure by manipulating the body’s myofascial system. Thus, Rolfing Structural Integration was born.
